“Where the hell have you been?” Max demanded. Kevin was tempted to throw him some shade, but looking at his disheveled clothes, messy hair, and very sleep-deprived eyes made Kevin bite his tongue.

“It was my fault,” Kane said. “Sorry. I was. I didn’t want…”

“What am I saying? I’m the one who should be sorry,” Max said. “It’s been a long night, is all.”

“I had one of those, too,” Kane whispered.

“Do you have an ID yet?” Kevin asked.

“Yeah. Prints say he’s Jamie McDougall, he—”

“No!” Kane yelled, pushing past Kevin. “Not Jamie, not my Jamie.”

Kevin and Max were pushed aside as Kane bounded up the stairs to his apartment. Kevin followed as soon as he recovered, and Max was right behind them.

“Oh, Jamie. I’m so sorry. I’m so, so, sorry.” Kane was being held back by two suited men when Kevin came into the room. Max hadn’t been kidding. This kid had been mutilated. The only thing left intact was his face. His bright green eyes seemed to burn a hole into Kevin’s soul, and he couldn’t look away.

“Kane. Kane,” Max was saying. “Can you tell me how you know him? Can you confirm this is Jamie McDougall?”

“Jamie, Jamie, Jamie didn’t deserve this. He was the sweetest thing. He was… Oh, Jamie, how am I gonna tell your mom?”

“You don’t have to,” Kevin said. “Max will take care of that. We will take care of everything. We will find the person who did this.”

“How?” Kane demanded. “This… He was just a kid.”

“Let’s get you out of here,” Max said, guiding Kane by the arm. “Let’s go back downstairs, and you can talk to me about Jamie, okay?”

Darius was walking in the front door as they came down the stairs, and he moved to pull out a chair so that Kane could sit. For a moment, no one spoke; they all just stood and stared at Kane’s raw emotions as they played out on his face. Kevin couldn’t say how Darius and Max passed the time—no doubt having a conversation in their minds. But Kevin was definitely watching Kane. If he had been broken this morning, Kevin could only imagine he was shattered right now.

It was Darius who broke the spell. “Kane. Can I get you anything?”

“I want whoever did this. I want their head on a plate. No, on a spike. I want them fed to the biggest Kraken in the sea. I want them to pay!”

“Right, yeah. So what I hear you saying is you’re really very upset by this loss of life?”

“Upset? Oh, hell no. I’m past upset. Jamie was sweet, kind, funny. He’s been working here for about a year and never missed a shift. Never took a sick day. Always went the extra mile… He didn’t deserve this.”

“No one deserves to die that way, Kane. We are doing everything we can.”

“What have you found out?” Kane demanded.

“It’s been twenty-four hours, Kane,” Darius said soothingly.

“I don’t want to be placated. I want to know who did this.”

“So do we,” Max said evenly.
